Philip was started on Prednisolone on May 23rd to reduce any inflammation that may be causing the coughing. On Monday the 24th, I took him to the CF center to be looked at. He was still gaining weight (Yay), and they decided to do a saline nasal wash and culture. Philip was not happy about that! Today, we got a call about the results. He still cultured staph (few), but he also cultured strep pneumonia. The doctor said it is not the strep as in strep throat, but it can lead to pneumonia. The problem with this is that the only oral medication that it is sensitive to, is a medication made for adults, or children with anthrax. So, they don't want to do that. It was looking like a hospital admission for IV antibiotics was in our future. The doctor decided to call an infectious disease specialist. They informed him that the strep should be sensitive to the Augmentin that he is already on. So, we will watch very closely, and when he finished his Augmentin, if anything starts to show (such as cough, runny nose), we are to call clinic immediately. He has been doing better the last few days, so we pray that when he finished the antibiotics, it does not come back.
